‎Supermarket operator Harris Teeter is preparing a new store concept that will include prominent positioning of some core housewares categories. Currently under renovation, two Harris Teeter supermarkets will emerge under the new format, 201central, a lifestyle-oriented store prototype that will feature an extensive assortment of wine, beer, specialty foods and products in specific general merchandise segments.

The 201central concept is branded in reference to one of the original Harris Food Stores, Store #201, that operated on Central Avenue in Charlotte, NC. The #201 store not only was Charlotte’s first full self-service supermarket but also was its first grocery to boast air conditioning and to stay open until 9 p.m. on Friday nights.

The reference to past innovation reflects Harris Teeter’s development of 201central as a fresh approach to supermarket operations. It offers customers more specialty services including in-store wine consultants, event coordination and catering as well as party rentals and educational classes focused on wine, beer and food pairings. The store will carry over 3,100 varieties of wine and over 680 varieties of beer from around the world, including approximately 35 brands of keg and local beers. In addition, 201central stores will carry home brewing and wine making systems and products. It also will carry a wide range of cigars, international and regional groceries, specialty cheese and olives, artisan breads, bulk foods including coffee, tea, nuts, grains and rice, and other specialty product categories such as Gluten Free.

On the general merchandise side, 201central stores will emphasize wine and bar accessories, appliances, kitchen gadgets, party goods and seasonal products.

The new pattern stores will occupy 30,000 square feet. They will operate at 13108 Eastfield Road in Huntersville, NC and 5939 Weddington-Monroe Road in Wesley Chapel, NC.
