In BIGinsight research conducted in August, just over 8.1% of consumers said they plan a major home repair this year versus 6.7% at the same time in 2011. As for home furnishings and housewares, about 11.8% of consumers said they were on the market for furniture this summer versus just over 9.4% last year, and 9% said they were interested in making a home appliance purchase versus 6.5% in the previous year. The market research firm also noted that more than 5% of consumers said in August that they plan to purchase a home versus just over 3% a year ago.
