The United States Environmental Protection Agency recognized 40 companies in the freight industry, including several retailers, with its 2012 SmartWay Excellence Awards for achievements in moving goods more efficiently while reducing carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions. Award recipients included Sears, Best Buy, Lowe’s and IKEA. The EPA SmartWay partnership is a public/private collaboration between the EPA and the freight transportation industry that helps shippers, carriers and logistics companies improve supply chain environmental performance and enhance energy and fuel efficiency.
