Black Friday week dollar sales increased for more than half of the small appliance segments tracked by The NPD Group this year, the market research firm announced. “Overall, home environment was the dollar winner with a 4% increase, while personal care appliances gained 4% in unit sales, and small kitchen electrics dollars remained flat despite small unit declines,” said Debra Mednick, NPD’s executive director of home business. The top selling small appliances based on dollar sales for Black Friday week, November 18 to 24 were upright vacuums, single-serve brewing systems and slow cookers, NPD stated. The top three small appliance unit volume gainers were slow cookers, electric toothbrushes and coffeemakers. NPD added that home soda machines more than doubled in sales versus the 2011 Black Friday Week and that chocolate fountains saw the largest year-over-year increase of all small appliance segments in the timeframe this year versus last. The market research firm said other top growth segments in this year’s Black Friday week were stick vacuums, blender/mixer/chopper systems, juice extractors, robotic vacuums and vacuum sealers, all of which saw double or triple-digit sales increases.
