J.C. Penney has cut 300 jobs at its Plano, TX, headquarters on Thursday, October 22, a move that is widely seen as one to reduce costs. The reductions account for 9% of the company’s total headquarters workforce, which numbers about 3,400. Daphne Avila, a spokesperson for the department store, told The Dallas Morning News that the company over the past several months has been evaluating its headquarters structure in an effort to identify opportunities for “greater simplification and higher productivity.” She called the job cuts “a difficult decision.” J.C. Penney is the latest retailer to announce headquarters job cuts. Earlier in October, Walmart said it was eliminating 450 positions at its Bentonville, AR, headquarters and Dollar General said it was eliminating some 255 positions at its Goodlettsville, TN, headquarters.
