For the fiscal month of June, the five weeks ended July 2, Costco Wholesale Corp. posted net sales of $12.17 billion, up 7% from the period last year.
With volatile fuel sales and foreign exchange rate effects excluded, the company stated, Costco comparable store sales gained 6.5%, with comps in the U.S. up 6.3%, those in Canada up 6.8% and those in other international markets up 7.1%.
Best performing sales regions in the U.S., Costco noted, were the Midwest, Bay Area, Texas and San Diego.
As for comps by merchandising category, Costco reported that soft lines were up in the high single digits with the jewelry, home furnishings, domestics, housewares and apparel segments leading. Hard lines were up in the high single digits with tires, seasonal, garden and health and beauty aids strong. In hard lines, the electronics segment gained in the mid to high single digits. Food and sundries were positive in the mid single digits while fresh foods comps gained in the low to mid single digit range.
