Iittala has added to its collection of glass birds, launching an exclusive edition inspired by the urban environments of Washington D.C. and Minneapolis.
Two Iittala retailers created visuals and descriptions of significant elements of their home cities. The descriptions were sent to designer Oiva Toikka who used it as a starting point for the design.
Derrik West, owner of Pop! Boutique in the capitol city and Megan Milowski from Always Mod provided design inspiration. The Washington bird features a pattern said to reflect Capitol Hill, while the Minneapolis bird has a green strip on the back of the twisted and windy decoration of its body, just as the Mississippi River cuts through the city, according to the company.
Toikka has spent more than four decades creating nearly 500 handcrafted glass bird specials for the Birds by Toikka collection, noted Iittala.
