Helen Maria Nugent
Helen Maria Nugent is a professor in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects (AIADO) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She is the founding chair of the Designed Objects programs and has 20 years of teaching and leadership experience in higher education. She has spearheaded successful design partnerships between SAIC and the Tacoma Museum of Art, CB2, Industreal, Danese Milano, Dupont Corian, The Future Perfect and Spazio Rossana Orlandi.
Nugent is a principal partner in Haelo Design, an independent, research-oriented studio that pursues speculative and commercial design projects with a focus on furniture, objects and exhibition design. Haelo’s work has been included in the Istanbul Design Biennial, the CHGO DSGN Show, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, Wanted Design and Neocon.
She has served as a juror for the Core77 Annual Design Awards, the Kurtich Traveling Scholarships, and the College Arts Association Professional Development Fellowships. Nugent has lectured widely on design, most recently in China, Boston, Chicago and Miami. Born and raised in Scotland, Nugent studied at the Glasgow School of Art, receiving a BFA with honors in environmental art and a Masters Degree in design.
