New Dinnerware Takes Design Inspiration From Multi-Cultural Trends

Dinnerware designs at the spring 2017 New York Tabletop Market will take inspiration from a variety of different cultures, from the Orient to the Caribbean. Pastel hues and color combinations taking their design inspiration from the water and earth will be dominant, as will tableware incorporating distinct organic shapes and textured elements.

BIA CORDON BLEU

BIA Cordon Bleu is debuting covered salt boxes, available in red stoneware and white porcelain. The company is also debuting embossed stoneware mugs in its Havana collection, two-tone porcelain bakeware to match its Isabel dinnerware collection, and a new collection of gift boxed porcelain/metal serveware sets.

FISKARS CORPORATION

Wedgwood is launching Gio, characterized as a “refined, yet relaxed” contemporary tableware collection in fine bone china comprising of plates, bowls, mugs, cups and saucers and serveware. The collection is designed to be used every day, from the three main meals to the little snack in between, as its shapes and serveware are ideal for sharing food “tapas style,” according to the company. Boasting a white background, Wedgwood Gio has a distinctive graphic design, which is inspired by Wedgwood’s bespoke Intaglio markings and geometric patterns where layers of ceramic are cut through to produce textured embossment. Most Gio pieces come in accented gift sets, packaged in an iconic Wedgwood blue box.

In addition, iittala will show metallic bowls in several sizes and platter in its Alvar Aalto Collection in a new contemporary color, rose gold.

GIBSON

Gibson Overseas will debut new glass dinnerware patterns under its Laurie Gates brand. Handcrafted by Turkish artisans, the glass features organic shapes and infusions of diffused color. Featured glass dinnerware will include Lorien and Corfu; Lorien features a scallop shape with alabaster-like layers and swirls of color. Corfu merges gold with natural modern silhouettes and textured glass. Gibson is also expanding its Everything Bowl and General Store merchandising statements.

GODINGER

Godinger will continue to create a lifestyle statement with dinnerware, flatware, glassware and other items for the table. The company will re-emphasize its Dublin brand, with updated dinnerware in both glass and ceramics, including its latest colorway, a light blue, which complements its gray and white toned offerings.

HOMER LAUGHLIN CHINA

Homer Laughlin China is showcasing seasonal designs for Halloween, Harvest and Christmas. One highlight is Fiesta’s Day of the Dead inspired Skull & Vine metallic pattern featured on dinnerware with Fiesta’s Foundry collection cast iron-like finish. The design is available on a lunch plate, chop plate, appetizer plate, tapered mug and pasta bowl, which can also be used for serving Halloween candy.

LENOX 

Lenox Corporation, under its namesake brand, will debut I.D. Initial dinnerware, so consumers can identify their table with casual initials for less formal special occasions. There are five pattern varieties in colorful fonts. Lenox’s Season’s Radiance dinnerware takes design inspiration from “the view of the ocean’s majestic horizon at sea,” and the metallic design elements are microwave and dishwasher safe.

Under kate spade new york, its casual dinnerware collection Charlotte Street is updated with a fresh accent collection focusing on lemons called “With a Twist,” including round platter, accent plate, accent mugs, set of four tidbits, set of two bowls, salt and pepper set, covered bowl, serving bowl, and three sectioned server. The brand’s New York City diner-inspired Order’s Up will also be expanded.

LIFETIME BRANDS

Lifetime Brands’ Mikasa Daniela dinnerware features intricate lace designs that are pressed into both the front and back of each piece of high-fired terracotta from Portugal; it is available in blue, white and gray. Mikasa Lena features a tonal botanical design with a touch of gold on bone china, while Aiden offers a marble design with earthy colors and layered metallics for a natural, yet modern look.

Mikasa Claire bone china dinnerware features a classic design with intricate blue and gold details, while Shane offers brown contrasting with blue and white in a mixture of matte and shiny finishes on Portuguese stoneware.

New from designer Kim Parker for its Gourmet Basics by Mikasa brand, Tropical Garden will feature vibrant tropical blooms in brilliant yellow, orange, and purple on porcelain. Also debuting, Arielle features a bold and exuberant black and white floral pattern for a contemporary look, while French Country was inspired by the vintage elegance of Limoges patterns in delicate pastel tones.

MAKE INTERNATIONAL

Ceramicist Keith Brymer Jones is debuting more than 40 new words in his Word Range. Jones has also introduced 15 new items to his word range that devote to marriage, including mugs, espresso cups and egg cups. Also new in Word will feature a collection based around parts of New York such as “Chelsea,” “LES,” “UWS” and “Bklyn.”

MEYER

Made of stoneware, Rachael Ray Brushstrokes features a simple circular design pattern with textural interest that is achieved using a wax resist technique. The collection’s crisp white body is decorated with swirls in a choice of five palettes: blue/aqua, sea salt gray/yellow, marine blue/lime, orange/orange, and red/red.

The Rachael Ray Pattern Edge coupe-shaped dinnerware collection combines a mostly solid colored body with a scroll design in contrasting white and gold on the edge of various tableware pieces, such as the salad plate, cereal bowl and mug. Pattern Edge is offered in three colors from the Cucina collection—  agave blue, cranberry red and mushroom brown.

PORTMEIRION GROUP

Portmeirion Group is expanding its giftable mug collection, showcasing new Spode Christmas tree pieces and previewing Choices, a new mix and match porcelain dinnerware collection. The Portmeirion Choices tableware collection features a variety of plates and bowls in a soft white, green and blue.

Portmeirion has also joined forces with award winning British designer Sara Miller. Four vibrant gold-edged mugs featuring giraffe, toucan, owl and flamingo designs will kick-start the launch.

ROBINSON HOME

In the Robinson Home Products showroom, Oneida is expanding on its fine bone china dinnerware offerings by debuting Puritan, featuring a classic rim design in platinum or gold, with coordinating flatware and stemware.

VILLEROY & BOCH

Hopping on the visual design trends of “hygge” and “chalet chic,” Villeroy & Boch’s Artesano Montagne gets its design inspiration from warm evenings by the fire in a Swiss Chalet or a luxury cabin in Aspen. Its classic Artesano collection also gets a hand painted update with natural tones in the aptly named Artesano Nature. Artesano Nature features soft warm tones of blue, green and beige featuring visible, gentle brushstrokes as part of the design.

VISTA ALEGRE

Vista Alegre’s Gold Exotic ancient Orient-inspired luxury table service features a floral pattern richly adorned with gold, to create a mixture of brightness and color. Also taking its inspiration from the Orient is Rêveries by designer Christian LaCroix, which is covered with exuberant patterns, bestiaries and imaginary landscapes; each piece has a blue lagoon halo and is outlined in platinum and gold.

Folkifunki by Jaime Hayon also brings fantasy inspired tableware to light with animals, plants, masks and images, including elements of the national folklore, interacting with the cosmos. Also featured is Vista Alegre’s Eternal, presenting delicate and discrete white geometric motifs in porcelain, with platinum applied in some pieces to reinforce the brightness and offering a touch of glamour.

ZAK DESIGNS

Zak is expanding its Bzyoo concept, mixing melamine, stainless steel, glass, stoneware and porcelain, and designed in collaboration with Michael Cleghorn, an Australian-based designer. New for this market is Bzyoo’s Rebel Collection, a coordinating assortment of stoneware and melamine dinnerware and serveware. Available in black, white or taupe, the collection includes a dinner and salad plate as well as a serving platter, a pair of salad servers, and two sizes of bowls.
