It seems like the first thing a lot of consumers think of when they start considering Valentine’s Day gifts is their pets.
According to research conducted by Wayfair, early shopping for the occasion is highly focused on significant pets. In early season buying prompted by the initiation of its Valentine’s Day sales, which commenced January 20, the online retailer’s Picks for the Pet Lover section emerged as the highest viewed promotional presentation Wayfair offered. In looking at data from January 20 through February 3, a Wayfair spokesperson noted, 84% of shoppers spent more money on pet and pet-themed products for Valentine’s Day than the Gifts for Him, Gifts for Her, Florals & Décor and Single-Life Picks presentations combined.
Of course, Valentine’s presents for human beings have likely taken off in the days since, as many gifts are of a perishable nature, and a lot of money spent on the occasion comes in the form of dinners and other such experiences. Still it’s worth noting that pets are a major Valentine’s Day opportunity. Wayfair pointed to its Lydia Pet Bed, 50-inch Premier Kitty Pad Cat Tree, Cat Laptop Scratch Pad, Bamboo Cross Pet Hammock, Pet Crate End Table, Stick with Me Painting Print on Canvas, the Doggy Décor Somebody Pooped Throw Pillow, and the Doggy Décor I Like Big Mutts Throw Pillow, as top-selling, pet-related items.
